Diaries, 1779-1807.

This collection consists of thirteen diaries, 1779-1806, which record school matters, local, state, national, and international affairs, travel in New York as well as Massachusetts and New Hampshire, the weather, church and militia activity, work patterns, social visits, and deaths. At various times in his career, Jones taught in Gerry, Provincetown, and New York. The diaries provide good descriptions of these towns, particularly those in New York. The earliest diary, 1779-1786, was evidently a reminiscence written by Jones in later life. The collection also includes a register, 1790-1807, of Jones' fellow students at New Ipswich Academy, New Ipswich, N.H., Leicester Academy, Leicester, Mass., and Williams Academy, Williamstown, Mass., and of the several hundred pupils he taught. There is also a register, 1806, of Jones' family genealogy. The diaries also include a reference to the Shakers at New Lebanon, New York, 2 May 1795; descriptions of the Dutch in New York; and references to Rev. Ezekiel Lysander Bascom (1779?-1841), minister in Gerry, Mass.
